Uses

Technology and other things I use:

  • Editor: Emacs (Emacs page here, my Emacs page here). If your editor isn’t Emacs, it’s crap.
  • Since I use Emacs, I also use Org mode a lot.
  • Blog: WordPress with Classic Editor. Classic Editor rocks, Gutenberg is garbage.
  • Thunderbird for most mail, Gmail for a couple of accounts.
  • GnuCash
  • Browsers: Firefox, Waterfox and Chrome.
  • Password manager: KeePassXC – using your browser or an online service is just stupid.
  • Software: Golang, SQL, Common Lisp, Emacs Lisp.
  • Spreadsheets: LibreOffice Calc. Yes, I have heard of Excel. Do not suggest I try it.
  • Computers: Two from System76: Adder and Meerkat. I want to use Linux, not install it. That is a hard concept for some people.
  • For monitors, I generally buy a new one (at least new for me) when I need one from Discount Electronics here in Austin. I am not tied to a particular brand.
  • Insignia Keyboards. I think “Insignia” is the in-house brand for Best Buy. I like them because they connect via USB.
  • Date format: YYYY-MM-DD, just like in RFC 3339; updated by RFC 9557. See also RFC 3339 vs ISO 8601. You have to pay to get ISO standards. What is the equilvalent of 2025-08-24? 24-AUG-25, or 25-AUG-24? We use computers to reduce ambiguity.

This list does not include MS garbage that I am forced to use for work.

“Uses” links: Uses dot Tech has a gitblub repo called Awesome Uses. Not the same as Uses This. See also this posting on Hacker News.

This post was created in Emacs with Org Mode and Love. You’re welcome. And stop looking at your stupid phone all the time.
