Free DNS

There are still some lists of free DNS servers out there.

I found two at About.com.

The first is called Top Free Internet DNS Servers. It gives some background info on each one.

The better of the two is called Free and Public DNS Servers. It presents them in a list format, which I prefer.

Some guy in India named Vivek has a list of free DNS servers, which was last updated December 12, 2010. This page was also posted at Host Outcast on June 7, 2011. The list was the same on both pages.

He lists the servers from:

• Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
• DNSAdvantage (now Neustar): 156.154.70.1 and 156.154.71.1
• OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 (check near the bottom of the page; I do not see a separate page about it)
• Norton: 198.153.192.1 and 198.153.194.1 (I cannot find a page on their site, but I tried them with the “host” command and they seem to work)
• GTEI DNS (now Verizon) (no link provided): 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.5 and 4.2.2.6
• ScrubIT: 67.138.54.100 and 207.225.209.66

I am going to start keeping a list of free DNS servers. I am seeing some weird things happening online. There was big talk about some DNS virus out there at DNS Changer Working Group (DCWG) . It seemed to come and go without incident. But now there are some sites that I was able to view before and now I cannot. But I can view these sites on other networks other than my home network. So I wonder if the DNS servers I use are affected.
